the courage to lose sight of the shore (part 3)

well, we are really really doing this.
and it’s hard, as i knew it would be.
(actually it’s even harder than i thought it would be.)

but it’s a good kind of hard.
the kind that means i’m doing what i set out to do.
despite the setbacks and the worries and the prophets of doom.
(not to mention the difficult physical work.)

i came across this word in a novel this week.
(yes, i take packing breaks and escape between the pages.)
and it seemed to speak to me in my current space.

imbroglio.
“a confused mass, an intricate or complicated situation.”
(origin and etymology: italian, of course, from imbrogliare “to entangle”)

hourly conflicting assessments.
“this is going well, we’ll get it all done!”
“oh my gosh, still so much to do! how will it ever come together?”
back and forth, the voices in my head.
all day long, all week long.

we weren’t going to take everything with us.
then we decided to make a clean sweep and pack it all.
to make our empty villa feel more like our home.
and now we probably won’t have room to take everything . . .
(sigh.)

questions:

  • will we be ready when the container arrives on monday?
  • will all of our stuff fit in the container?
  • will the loading process go smoothly?
  • will our shipment arrive in six weeks, safely and intact?
  • oh, and will mr. smith pass the airline in-cabin weight requirement?

these logistical questions are weighing heavily on my mind right now.
i have neither the time nor the energy
to even venture into the emotional realm.

in mere days, on monday 10/10 (christopher columbus day),
we will wave goodbye to our belongings.
as they travel first by truck to seattle,
then by ship through the panama canal, and then
through the strait of gibraltar to the mediterranean.
until they arrive at their final destination,
with us at villa magnolia.

that will be a happy day indeed.

WOW! It’s all coming together!! I will keep all of you (belongings included) in my thoughts and prayers as the journey to the villa gets even closer. Tell Mr. Smith to lay off the Twinkies, and be sure to keep the updates coming!! <3
