the 26-year quest

i have wanted a pink house since my oldest son was two years old. that was in 1995.

it was the summer, almost 27 years ago, that our young family was moving from seattle washington to anchorage alaska. we were planning to paint our newly-purchased home when we arrived.

i really liked the paint color of a beautiful big pink house in a ritzy seattle neighborhood not too far from where we were located. so my never-shy mom boldly knocked on their door to ask for the color name πŸ˜‚ (eric and i stayed in the car, alexander asleep in his car seat). when she didn’t return to us for 45+ minutes, i thought she’d been kidnapped! the children of the household, however, were sweet kids who let my mom in and sat and talked with her. their mother (who was on the phone) glanced down from the upstairs landing at them, then decided to ignore the visitor and continue her conversation, leaving her young son and daughter alone with a stranger (!?). in the end, my mom never did get the paint color (though our HOA 😑 would never have approved that shade anyway).

twenty years later, in 2015, we put an offer on what we called “the pink house” in portugal. after four long months, the real estate deal fell through. though i was very disappointed, my disappointment didn’t linger . . . because just a short time later a certain villa in italy came to our attention (a story you all know quite well).

when in italy, i LOVE taking pictures of all the delightful pink houses. there’s at least one on every street and i smile at them all. one of my best friends owns a beautiful pink bed-and-breakfast (center photo in collage).

my local farmacia in barbarasco is painted pink too.

even the house my italian grandma grew up in (now a farmacia as well) is a lovely shade of pink.

and i’ll share just one more favorite pink house before i move on >> eric and i stayed at this beautiful bed-and-breakfast in pendleton oregon last summer. the trip came about simply because i’d seen the inn on facebook and loved the color.

so (drum roll) . . . after waiting 26 long years (second drum roll) . . . i finally got MY VERY OWN PINK HOUSE last fall, when my husband painted the exterior of our new home! it made me positively giddy watching the first few strokes of color go on. and i’m filled with excitement every time i see it now.

plus can you believe this? the color name is CAT’S MEOW! 😻 we decided it was mr. smith sending me, eric, and harlowe his love and good vibes.

i just wish my crazy wonderful mom was here to see me FINALLY get my pink house πŸ’•πŸ’—
