why do i travel?
one essential reason.
to gain as many perspectives as i can.
only one hour after arriving in portugal, a startling revelation.
a novel way to approach a key coaching concern, unexpected clarity.
. . . no one around me aware of the puzzle pieces snapping into place.
perspective #1.
sitting at my laptop the next morning, ready to do a few hours of work.
my thoughts suddenly fresh and crisp, ideas flowing in.
. . . lack of sleep from a long day of travel no competition for new surroundings.
perspective #2.
sipping a delicious macchiato in lisbon’s commerce square, history’s ghosts present.
stumbling through a foreign language, realizing people value humanness more.
. . . goosebumps as i began to comprehend my role in the vastness of this globe.
perspective #3.
why do i travel?
because seeing a new panorama enriches my world like nothing else.
a new perspective challenges my previously held beliefs.
a new perspective cracks my set-in-stone judgments.
a new perspective reinvigorates my tired old concepts.
a new perspective shakes up my hard-and-fast rules.
tell me. how do you enrich YOUR life with new perspectives?

Reading your posts give me new perspectives! It is so true that travel, engaging with a different culture, new environment enriches and shifts our ideas and preconceived notions. I find reading blogs, and reading in general opens my mind to new ideas and new twists on old. I enjoy ‘traveling’ virtually through your words, thanks!
Travel feeds both my love of exploration and my need for perspective. When I was on my big backpacking tour of Europe at 19, the distance literally gave me the perspective to look back at my life and realize I wanted something more/different than what I was headed for.
Then again, driving home from a short day-trip with my son and some friends the other day, I took a wrong turn and ended up on the “scenic route” rather than the main highway (with no logical way to rectify it other than to keep going)…in a snowstorm, in the dark. The lesson: sometimes slow and deliberate is just as effective as (maybe even safer than) quick and easy.
April, I was wondering just that. And yes, it brings a new, wider perspective on things. I heard recently of a great traveler who said that after the travel or vacation is over and the experiences become memories, they continue to impact your perception forever. I find that this is one of the priceless values of travel. I’m jealous (in a good way) and applaud you for doing what many of us just dream of.
I’ll have to think about that question. I think I enjoy the ‘exercise” of shifting my perspective. As for travel, oh yes. Travel, particularly abroad, illuminates for me the the vast difference among cultural perspectives and how much more ‘at home’ I feel in European countries. So that’s it, yes? Perspective. I am enjoying YOUR travels.
Traveling is a great way to gain new perspectives! Talking to other people is an excellent way for me to find a fresh perspective. I have also found that having an open mind can help me grow in this area of my life.
I love to enrich my life through travel…it completely shifts my perspective. When asked what would you do if you had enough money to do whatever you want…my answer is always…travel the world and take my friends/family with me to experience new things. Love that you live your life as a world traveler!
Oh, how I love living vicariously through you as you visit Portugal, my Motherland. I can’t wait to see more photos! And hear more of your perspectives! xo
Wow – I should travel more – I am planning on 2 trips this year – this post is total inspiration for more. Thank you sweet soul xx
