yesterday (3 june 2020) we entered fase 4 of the lockdown easing in italy. travel between the different regions (and also unrestricted travel between italy and other schengen countries) is permitted. not sure if this is officially fase 4 or fase 3/part 2, but i’m going with fase 4 since i think it’s a fairly substantial difference. most importantly, our coronavirus numbers are staying low. we’ve come so far!
to recap . . .
• fase 1 (10 march – 3 may) was the very strict 55-day lockdown. we were only allowed to go to the local grocery store and the pharmacy (and only one person per household). outside walks were only allowed within 200 meters of one’s home. i didn’t go through these doors once during this period!
• fase 2 (the two-week period between 4-17 may) allowed us to order take-out food and go on longer walks (but still within our comune).
• fase 3 (16 days between 18 may – 2 june) saw the opening of restaurants, hairdressers, and other businesses (all with social distancing rules and PPE in place). we were also allowed to finally travel within our region.
and now italy is open to us once again. so as soon as the weather clears, my husband and i will be on our way to our favorite little fishing village on the ligurian coast ❤️ (not far from villa magnolia, but in a different region!)
UPDATE: so some say italy is still in fase 3 (and some think we haven’t even left fase 2). since i can’t seem to find any official title for this next step of our coronavirus journey, i’m just going to refer to it as “the unlocking of italy.” which would make today, let’s see . . . after the initial 55 days of strict lockdown? day 32. a trivial matter, yes (but apparently quite important to me ?)
in the meantime, i’d like to take another look back . . .
march 20 (from my facebook post, lockdown in italy day 11):
recovering from shingles and getting stronger each day with my B12, while waiting for the devastating numbers in italy to finally peak and then begin their descent. feeling anxious though, as i watch the numbers climb in my homeland and anticipate this same overwhelming sadness all over again.
to those who are NOT already doing so, please STAY HOME ❤️
march 21 (from my facebook post, lockdown in italy day 12):
waving and blowing kisses back and forth between my friend federica’s balcony and mine . . . wonderful and horrible all at once. how i miss her in-person hugs ❤️
we lost 793 more italians today. PLEEEEAAAASE stay home.
